Hyack Parade
New Westminster, B.C.
May 2005

The Internationally known Hyack parade was the first official attendance of the CMRS in a parade. As always, the Hyack festival put on a superb showcase for spectators from throughout the lower mainland and various parts of the USA. In attendance were Robert Morrison with his 1945 Ford GPW, jeep, Colin Stevens with his 1944 Willys MB and Scott Lorette, (former Canadian U.N. Peacekeeper) with his 1971 Kaiser M38 A1 CDN3 UN Jeep. At one point during the parade the three jeeps became separated from the front and back off the parade. While waiting for the parade to close up, the jeeps entertained the spectators by picking up children and giving them ride in the units, much to the enjoyment of everyone.

Canadian Military Trivia - Cold War
bulletIn some ways the Cold War "started" in Ottawa when Soviet Cypher Clerk Igor Gouzenko defected and brought with him papers proving that the USSR was spying on her "ally" - Canada. Soviet agents were seeking secrets of nuclear weapons etc. Canada's Prime Minister almost handed Gouzenko back over to the Soviets but intelligence staff were able to keep him. His testimony and evidence helped to convict several Soviet spies including Fred Rose, a Member of Parliament!  Some of the  spy documents he handed over are in the collection of the RCMP Museum in Regina, Saskatchewan.  http://archives.cbc.ca/IDCC-1-71-72-176/conflict_war/gouzenko/
bulletCanada believed in supporting the defence of Western Europe from an expected as part of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). Canada stationed an air division in Europe as well as the 1st Canadian Division (Army). Over time this force was reduced.
