Canadian Military Trivia - 1837 Rebellion
50
Canadian volunteers under RN Captain Drew rowed across
the Niagara River in winter of 1837 and captured the rebel
supply ship Caroline which was tied up on the US side of
the river. She was set on fire and set adrift, just above
Niagara Falls. The vessel did NOT tumble over the falls
right away as depicted in US literature of the times, but
later broke up and went over in pieces. This incident almost
started a war between the US and Great Britain (via her
colonies of Canada).
