RCAF Stn Boundary Bay Cenotaph Dedication

Boundary Bay Airport, Delta, BC
May 7th 2005

The cenotaph service was to honour the thousands of individuals, both civilian and military who served at RCAF Stn Boundary Bay, from 1941-45. RCAF Boundary Bay was one of over 100 training facilities in the massive undertaking called the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, (BCATP). The plan was to train Commonwealth air crew in a safe environment away from the ravages of the war torn skies over England. The BCATP was also established in Australia and South Africa however the lions share of training took place across Canada. The English referred to the Plan as The Empire Air Training Scheme or "EATS". Once Canada's Prime Minister Mackenzie King had negotiated the details of the Plan with England the momentous task of construction began. Aerodrome sites were selected across the country and one of these future sites included a sleepy farming community  known as Delta on Boundary Bay, British Columbia. Built in 1941 the official opening of the Aerodrome took place on July 2nd 1941 by none other than Prime Minister Mackenzie King.

The station was home to two units of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, No. 18 Elementary Flying Training School, (EFTS) and No. 5 Operational Training Unit, (OTU), and three Home Defence squadrons, No. 133 Fighter Squadron, (f), No. 132 (f) and No. 14 (f).

For this service several former staff and students, RCAF veterans and Civilian staff were on hand to witness this long overdue event.

The event was Sponsored by 828 Hurricane Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets and at least six Air Cadet Squadrons took part in the ceremony.

Michael DesMazes, RCAF Boundary Bay and Abbotsford historian, a member of the CMRS, was on hand with a joint display with the Delta Museum and Archives showcasing the RCAF history of the Aerodrome at Boundary Bay.

Canadian Military Trivia - Korean War
bulletThis was a United Nations peace making (not peace keeping) effort. Canada sent a Brigade of army troops, some destroyers, transport aircraft and F-86 Sabre jet fighter pilots.
bulletThe 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (2PPCLI) was awarded the US Presidential Citation, a blue bar which they still wear on their shoulder, in recognition of their key role in stopping a major Communist attack at Kapyong,  Korea in April 1951. This honour was shared with the 3RAR and US Army Co A, 72nd Heavy Tank Battalion.
